DivX is particularly convenient for storing home videos, as such files are so much more compact than the native DV format.

An additional feature of version 2.60 is that it allows users to browse the PlayStation Store for downloadable content without requiring them to log in to the PlayStation Network.

However, actually downloading such content still requires the use of a PlayStation Network account.

The download is around 140M. Although that's par for the course, it will take a big chunk out of an entry-level broadband plan that only allows 400 or 500M a month.

In those circumstances, it makes sense to persuade a PS3-using friend with a more generous Internet plan to download the update to a PC, and then install it on the PS3s via a storage device.

Still, using System Update reduces the risk that you'll end up with the wrong version of the update for your region.

In related news, Sony has also released the 5.03 update for the PSP that's intended to improve system stability.
