The latest firmware for the PlayStation 3 supports DivX playback and a new Photo Gallery application.

From Sony's point of view, the highlight of the new version 2.60 firmware for the PS3 is that it allows the installation and use of the new Photo Gallery application.

Photo Gallery automatically organises photos into 'events' based on the date and time they were taken - much like iPhoto on Mac OS X.

Other groupings can be created, for example by the number of people in the shot, or their expressions (eg, smiling). Sony warns that because groups are formed automatically, "in some cases the results might not be as expected."

The application also allows the creation of photo playlists and the presentation of slideshows.

The Photo Gallery application must be downloaded and installed separately from the firmware update.

Despite Sony's focus on Photo Gallery, it's quite possible that many PS3 owners will be more excited by the arrival of DivX 3.11 playback, give the variety of material that's available in this format.

What else is there in 2.60? Please read on.
