Tridgell said he and Bob Edwards would be teaching a free and open source software development course at the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science. The course will cover, among other things, the history of FOSS, how FOSS communities are organised and governed, how the development cycle works and how FOSS licences work. The syllabus also covers legal issues faced by FOSS projects, source code control systems, and bug tracking and quality control. Tridgell said that students would learn about FOSS in a practical manner, by studying and participating in real projects, with practical tutorial sessions covering most of the time. Tridgell is well known for having founded the Samba project, creating software that acts as a domain controller for Windows on Linux systems. His other main contribution has been the back-up software rsync.
