See here for details, original story continues below: It’s the G8000 Google Phone, and not only does it effectively look identical to the now discontinued Kogan Agora, its specs seem identical, with the G8000 powered by “Google Android”. If this really is the discontinued Agora, it makes sense to try and flog the remaining manufactured units. Costs must be recovered, after all. I’m sure the phone itself would work just fine with its advertised features, but the main caveats would be no guarantees whatsoever of any future Android OS updates, and no guarantees any Android software will ever work on the phone or will ever have new software developed for it thanks to those screen resolution issues that cruelled the Agora in the first place. The issue of updates is a big one, as this was being left to the phone manufacturer to develop, using Google’s Android updates as a base. The cost of the phone is US $240, with a minimum order of 100 pieces required. I’d have to go and check the Agora specs, which I thought was going to be a 3G model, but the G8000 is only a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE device, so if it isn’t the actual Kogan Agora, it’s a very close - and pointless - copy. So… for anyone that still wants a Kogan Agora styled Google Android phone, some phone shops in Hong Kong or elsewhere in Asia will probably have a few kicking around. But unless you simply must own a piece of history, this is one phone you should definitely skip, especially in Australia where our dollar has dropped so low against the USD. |
