Ustream.TV app for iPhone – buffering hell! E-mail

The iPhone’s first video streaming app, Ustream.TV, is finally available as a free download for the iPhone 1G, 2G and apparently the iPod Touch 2G only, but while it’s nice, it buffers way too much to actually be useful.

It’s all over the news – iPhone and iPod Touch 2G owners connected to a Wi-Fi network will be able to watch the Obama inauguration today from their iDevices.

Well, woop de do. Chances are, if you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network, you’ll be at home, at work or somewhere where a TV will be close by, and you’ll get a far better picture watching there, than on your iPhone.

Given streaming’s propensity to descend into buffering hell when there are too many users connected at the same time (and even if there aren’t), I predict many will try it out, and then give up in disgust, looking for a real TV set instead.

I’ve tried all kinds of channels so far, on two high-speed broadband connections (connected to Wi-Fi), and virtually every single channel starts buffering very quickly.

Perhaps it’s because I’m down here in Australia, but there is one good thing about Ustream.TV – at least it works for a few seconds at a time, unlike the Joost iPhone application, which still hasn’t worked even once!

That’s after Joost for iPhone being available for a few weeks now, but aside from showing me what I could be watching but just can’t (which includes the upcoming Obama inauguration live feed), both Ustream and Joost on the iPhone are simply exercises in iTeasing.

Like I said, maybe it’s because of my geographic location – others online have reported more success than me.

But if simple ol’ video streaming works so badly for me, I’ll bet I’m not the only one… hang on.. this article is buffering… 5%... 10%... 15%... 50%... 75%.... 78%... 79%.... 89%... 99%...

Ah, back with you again. Like I was saying, I’ll bet I’m…. buffering… 50%... 100%... I’ll bet I’m not the only one having this prob… 76%.... 98%.... lem.

We might be in the 21%... 84%.... 100%... 21st century, but things still aren’t perfect. Oh well. Back to my trusty… 54%... (buffering….) 78%.. 99%... TV, where things are a lot smoother.

Maybe we should bring Buffy back… Buffy the buffering slayer. Sadly she’s not going to be of much use against the evil scourge of buffering!
