IBM's patent blitz E-mail

That's four US companies, five Japanese and one Korean. Maybe America's 1980s concerns that its technology lead could be pegged back by Asia were well founded.

Despite setting a new record for US patents, IBM has also announced that it will increase the number of inventions that it publishes rather than patents.

The publication of an invention allows its unrestricted use by others.

In addition, patent offices can use published inventions as proof of prior art to either disallow or limit the scope of patent applications.

"IBM's leadership in the strategic use of intellectual property is based on balancing proprietary and open innovation," said John E Kelly III, IBM senior vice president and director of IBM Research.

"Our goal is helping stimulate innovation as public investments in large infrastructure projects are being planned to boost global economies."

IBM officials say the company's plan to increase the number of published inventions to more than 3000 per year will focus on technology that will increase the build out of smarter infrastructure.
