Nokia’s N97 operating system is an evolution of the existing Series 60 OS, and while the main demo video looks slick and fast, it’s not “brand new” in the way that the iPhone OS, Palm’s Web OS and Android all are.

All those past rumours of Nokia interested in buying Palm might start up again if Palm really hits a home run - but all of that is yet to be seen.

Australia is awaiting its “own” Android phone – the Kogan Agora, announced late last year and due at the end of the month. Possibly its biggest weakness is a 2.5-inch screen that doesn’t stretch right to the edge of the phone’s face, which has come as a bit of a surprise after the world saw spy shots.

This means a smaller window to all the available information you can see on the 3-inch+ sized screens of its competitors.

The Kogan Agora will be sold completely unlocked, however, so can freely be used with any carrier, and despite the smaller screen size revelation is still highly anticipated.

In related Android news the Android operating system is going to be available on a “desktop” device – although this does not quite mean a “desktop computer” just yet.

"NIMble" is the name of an Android “deskphone”, which you can see here at a Gizmodo story, and it was designed by an iPhone engineer, which adds to its allure, and only makes us wonder when a real Android “desktop computer” will be launched.

So, the news that Optus could well be bringing the G1 gPhone to Australia soon is very interesting, and ZDNet’s article does appear to be a scoop, but just as there are likely people buying iPhone 3Gs right now who are set to wish in June or July this year that they’d waited a few more months, any actual launch of the G1 gPhone in Australia might well be worth skipping if all those G2 rumours really are true!
