Although there are plenty of rumours floating about that HTC is hard at
work on the G2, a successor to the G1 Android gPhone, an online report
claims that Optus support staff support documents in advance of its
sale, although both Optus and Google are denying everything. Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
Although gPhones have been grey-imported in Australia and are being used, no-one is yet officially selling the device, with much speculation over when the G1 would officially arrive, and which telco would sell it. Doubts still remain over the quality of Optus’ 3G network, given the overselling of the network that has taken place thanks to the heavily promoted iPhone, Optus’ own “timeless” voice plans, and other heavily promoted deals from smaller telcos reselling Optus airtime at even cheaper rates than Optus itself. In typical fashion, both Optus and Google are denying all knowledge of the documents and any impending sale, but if the reports of a successor G2 phone are true, who would want to buy a G1 gPhone that could be superseded in just months? Telstra is supposedly very interested in the G2 gPhone, with Telstra executives reportedly saying it is better than the iPhone and even the new Palm “Pre” phone, although given these are only really rumours, no-one yet knows. We do however know that HTC has been rapidly advancing its designs and has become a major brand name in its own right, after years of simply being an “OEM” (original equipment manufacturer) with other brand names on the phones it created. Of course, Google would not have worked with HTC to create the G1 gPhone in the first place were it not a reputable and capable manufacturer, and its various HTC Touch and Touch HD models have received deserved acclaim. The iPhone still rules the roost when it comes to the best graphical user interface, with only the Pre truly “wow”-ing the world in an iPhone-esque manner with an impressive new operating system since the iPhone itself was first announced. Android was impressive, to be sure, but Palm's Pre seems to be even more so - especially given many had given up on Palm ever delivering on its promise of a new mobile OS. Nokia’s N97 does look very interesting too, but the Palm tackles the iPhone problem with an entirely new operating system that looks a heck of a lot smoother than Android, although Google is no doubt advancing the platform as quickly as it can for future phone models.
