iPhone nano heading for Asia? E-mail

Rumour and speculation about the supposed iPhone nano continue with reports that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) are in line to supply Apple with chips for the mooted handset.

Both TSMC and UMC are based in Taiwan, and the latest round of speculation seems to have its roots in a report by Economic Daily News that the two companies are likely receive orders from Apple, and that the iPhone nano will be launched no earlier than June.

The idea of a iPhone nano has been circulating for some time, and the rumours received a fillip in December 2008 when case manufacturer XSKN added a section for iPhone nano cases to its web site.

A rendering of a purported XSKN iPhone nano case also went into circulation.

One speculation, attributed to AmTech (aka American Technology Research) is that the iPhone nano is destined for China and other Asian countries.

As far as the research firm has been able to determine, AT&T - Apple's exclusive US iPhone partner - has yet to begin testing prototypes of the hypothetical handset.

But a debut for a new Apple product outside the US would mark a new chapter in the company's history.

Exactly how the iPhone nano (or whatever it comes to be called) would differ from the current iPhone 3G is also the subject of speculation.

Suggestions include a smaller screen, reduced storage capacity, and the elimination of the GPS capability.

Another possibility is that Apple has used its PA Semiconductor subsidiary to reduce the number of components required, and thereby cut the size and cost of the device.
