January Patch Tuesday about as good as it gets E-mail
by Stephen Withers
Friday, 09 January 2009
Australian system administrators preparing to return to work after an extended summer holiday may be relieved to discover that Microsoft is only planning one security bulletin for the first Patch Tuesday of 2009. The bad news is that it will address a critical vulnerability in Windows.

Microsoft's advance notification of the bulletins to be released on January 2009's Patch Tuesday lists a solitary item.

A remote code execution vulnerability is rated critical on Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003, and moderate on Vista and Server 2008.

The problem extends to server core installations of Windows Server 2008.

Full details will be released at approximately 10am on January 13, US PST.

As usual, Microsoft will also release updates to the Malicious Software Removal Tool and the Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter.
