The report Births: Final Data for 2006 appears at the website of the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a federal department concerned with the health and safety of the American people. The CDC report states that the highest teen birth rates are in the southern and southwestern states, while they are the lowest in the northeastern states. In fact, the overall teen birth rate in the United States increased in 26 of the 50 states in 2006. The USA Today article “Teen birth rates up in 26 states” quoted Paul Sutton, who is a NCHS demographer. Sutton stated, "To see 26 states with statistically significant increases is fairly remarkable. We're seeing increases in both the number of teens having births and also the rate at which they are having births. Both of them are going up." The USA Today article also provides a descriptive map of teen birth rate statistics for the United States. It is called “Teen births: State-by-state.” Page two states the state statistics for the three highest rates of teen birth rates, and the three lowest rates. |
