Whilst not providing nearly as funny a headline as last year, when Mark Philippoussis provided Wii Tennis opposition to Australian Open patrons, this year Nintendo offer up Novak Djokovic to take on.

The Australian Tennis Open is running from January 19th until February 1st at the Melbourne Tennis stadiums.

Nintendo Australia will once again provide significant sponsorship and, during the first week of the Open, give patrons the chance to take on defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic.

So work on the waggle, clock up some hours with Wii Sports, and book your tickets to Melbourne.  Official press release follows:

Nintendo, Official Gaming Console Partner of the 2009 Australian Open, gives you the once in a lifetime opportunity to play Wii Sports tennis against Australian Open 2008 defending champion Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic will be visiting the Wii Tennis Club, one of Nintendo's two dedicated areas at the 2009 Australian Open, and one lucky fan will be invited to come down and take on Djokovic in a match of Wii Sports tennis.

Djokovic, who started playing tennis at the age of four, and turned professional in 2003, is a Wii fan and is relishing the opportunity to take on another fan during the Australian Open. Currently ranked number three in the world, Djokovic has won one Grand Slam title and four Masters Series titles.

Nintendo will also have another area at the Australian Open, The Players Lounge, where you can beat the heat and relax while playing Nintendo DS and Wii games.
