Science DiscussionsDr. Yang is now with the Department of Breast Surgery, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong Province, China They state in the abstract to their paper, “Targeted therapy for metastatic diseases relies on the identification of functionally important metastasis genes from a large number of random genetic alterations.” A computational algorithm (large database) was used to map alterations in recurrent genes that were thought to be related to the diagnosis of breast cancer and, in many cases, to a poor prognosis with the cancer. From this analysis, 8q22 genomic gain was identified. It was found that 8q22 increases the chance of the metastasis of the gene metadherin (MTDH). The 8q22 genomic gain was then validated with 250 samples of breast tumors as being present in over 40% of breast cancers and, when present, resulting in poor medical outcomes for the breast cancer patients.
