Apple claims the 17 in MacBook Pro "is the world's thinnest and lightest 17-inch notebook" as it is less than 25 mm (1 in) thick and weighs in at 2.99 kg (6.6 lb).

Other aspects of the 17 in MacBook Pro design include a widescreen 1920 x 1200 LED backlit display driven by NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT chips allowing a trade off between speed and performance. Apple claims the display has a 60 percent greater colour gamut for "desktop quality colour".

The standard configuration features a 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 4G of RAM, a 5400 rpm 320G disk, and a SuperDrive DVD burner.

Options include a 2.93GHz CPU, 8G of RAM, a 7200 rpm hard drive or a 128 or 256G solid state drive, and antiglare display, a range of adaptors for for connecting external displays to the Mini DisplayPort, and the Apple Remote.

Standard interfaces include 802.11n wireless, Bluetooth, gigabit Ethernet, three USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire 800 port.  There's also the now-standard MultiTouch trackpad and iSight camera.

Apple has come in for criticism in the past for failing to blow its own environmental trumpet, but the company is plugging the green credentials of the new model. It is said to use "highly recyclable materials", the LED backlight eliminates the mercury used in fluorescent backlights, the screen is made with arsenic-free glass, internal cables and parts are PVC-free, and no brominated flame retardants are used.

While the MacBook Pro rumour proved correct, Apple did not announce a new Mac mini as some had predicted.
