In a merry Christmas announcement, Nintendo are teaming up with a video download service for the Wii game console.

A large Japanese ad agency is joining forces with Nintendo to bring a video download service into the households of close to 35 million Wii owners.

Few details are known at this point in time, but the ad company, Dentsu announced this week, that they plan to create specific programs for the Wii service.

It is looking like the focus of the service will be on cartoon downloads as well as similar entertainment programs; some free some for a fee.

As with all things Nintendo, the companies plan to launch the service sometime in 2009 with the rest of the world kept in the dark on when or if the service will be rolled out.

Also, as with all things Nintendo, the service does not look like it intends to directly compete with Microsoft’s Netflix download service for Xbox 360, or indeed the similar planned service for Sony’s PS3 game console.
