Windows 7 beta 1 download mania wants to start E-mail

Many people have said it’s all just BS, and that both the illegal torrent and the real, official download will come online in a “few days” time, meaning we’ll all just have to wait – unless you’re one of the lucky few “select beta testers” with the official code in your hands right now.

Given that Windows 7 promises to be everything that Vista wasn’t, yet built on top of the Vista code base, it’s not surprising that people want to get their hands on Windows 7 to try it out for themselves.

I’ve personally been running a Windows 7 pre-beta for weeks now and have stopped using Vista completely, and so far it’s all been running like a charm.

In all likelihood the 7000 build, if it is indeed real, will leak out before the official beta download period starts, with comments from those supposedly in-the-know that there are no “super surprises” to be unveiled – just an even more stable version of the existing pre-beta builds.

This will disappoint some who were hoping to see Steve Ballmer show off something special at the pre-CES keynote he’s inherited from Bill Gates, so unless all the 7000 beta build speculation ends up being wrong, Steve Ballmer had better show off a monkey dance or two to get people talking about something – other than the fact the official download will be available at last.

After all, all those who are really interested already know about Windows Azure, Windows 7, Office Live web editions that will feature web-based versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

If Ballmer’s presentation is just going to be a re-hash of the well reported PDC conference... well it’ll be a bit boring. People want excitement, they want news, they want surprises.

So... there’s still time for Microsoft to surprise us all with an official Windows 7 beta 1 download before 2008 is over, and if not, some special new features no-one was expecting.

Here’s hoping! And here’s hoping Microsoft faces up to the economic realities of the global financial crisis and the very low prices of netbooks to actually deliver Windows 7 at much cheaper prices that we’ve seen for Vista and XP in the past – or the threat of free Linux could prove far too tempting for a cash-strapped world.

Update: A supposedly real, yet still pirated edition of Windows 7 beta 1 has hit the torrents, please click here for all the details!
