iPhone 3G users who’ve patiently been waiting for the iPhone Dev Team
to release its “yellowsn0w” application can now see a video of the
unlock in action – as they impatiently wait for December 31, 2008 when
the app is due to be released!Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
Although the iPhone Dev Team has shown that we can take them at their word, people wanted to see a demo of the unlock app in operation, and the Dev Team have obliged. Dev Team member MuscleNerd used the “Qik” smartphone streaming application to stream a video (which can be seen at the Dev Team blog) of a 3G iPhone being unlocked, although at this stage only through a command line with “yellowsn0w” typed in by hand, with everything mirrored on a Mac screen, presumably through the SDK interface. However the iPhone Dev Team has promised that software as simple as the existing PwnageTool and QuickPwn will be released by year’s end to make it as simple as possible for end-users to operate - which is the reason why the software hasn't yet been made officially available. As the Dev Team noted again and again, only those with an iPhone 3G “2.11.07 baseband or earlier” will be able to take advantage of the free unlock – anyone who has updated to iPhone OS 2.1 or 2.2 and didn’t use a pwned firmware update will have had their baseband updated, and won’t be able to use this unlock. Of course Apple will no doubt try to reverse the unlock when it releases iPhone OS 2.3 or higher, but the Dev Team’s advice will be the same – don’t update until they say so, and when you do, use their software tools to do it so your newly unlocked iPhone 3G doesn’t get re-locked! iPhone 3G’s with unsupported basebands can’t be downgraded to an earlier baseband as yet, and there’s no word on when the Dev Team will have those unlocks ready, although you can imagine they’ll be working on it in 2009. The same goes for the iPod Touch second generation and jailbreaking ability. All of the Dev Team’s focus has been on the iPhone 3G, only one team member had a new second-gen iPod Touch, but a breakthough on a jailbreak will surely come in 2009, too. iPhone 2G owners – those with the original “silver back” iPhone haven’t had to wait – an unlock and jailbreak has been available for months now, with Apple seemingly no longer concerned about providing baseband updates for this now superseded model. So... the true iPhone 3G unlock is a little over a week away, meaning it will arrive before the Windows 7 beta hits, and will no doubt enjoy a flurry of news reports and user reviews almost immediately after it goes live. Cool! |
