“Alliance” formed to make advanced car batteries – in the US E-mail

With lithium ion battery technologies being advanced, designed and manufactured in Asia, a new US “alliance” of “leading US battery and advanced materials companies” and “one of the country’s largest national laboratories” is being formed to ensure advanced batteries are designed and manufactured in the US, so US companies aren’t dependent on foreigners.

Energy independence is a big and important theme these days, and despite the cost of oil falling to below US $40 a barrel from its previous $150+ heights, the US wants to be at the forefront of advanced battery technology and have it manufactured in the US.

No-one knows where oil prices will be in the future, or if they’ll go above the $150+ per barrel pricing we saw only months ago, and with the US under threat from growing Asian power, it comes as no surprise to see the US making moves to ensure it develops the best technology and can manufacture it on US soil.

This is important not only for the US Military, but also the US automotive industry, while consumers and businesses will also benefit enormously from reliable and long life battery technology – especially if it can be recharged from renewable sources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, hydro and other sources, beyond existing coal-fired and nuclear power stations.

Below is a fascinating press release from the newly formed “National Alliance for Advanced Transportation Battery Cell Manufacture”, which offers more detail as to why the alliance is being set up, who is behind it, and what US Government resources are needed for the “Alliance” to achieve its goals.

“Leading U.S. battery and advanced materials companies, with support from one of the country's largest national laboratories, have formed the National Alliance for Advanced Transportation Battery Cell Manufacture, known as the "Alliance," to manufacture advanced lithium ion battery cells for transportation applications in the United States.

“Lithium ion batteries are anticipated to replace gasoline as the principal source of energy in future cars and military vehicles. Today, United States automobile manufacturers and defense contractors depend upon foreign suppliers — increasingly concentrated in Asia — for lithium ion battery cells.

“The founding members of the Alliance include 3M, ActaCell, All Cell Technologies, Altair Nanotechnologies, Dontech Global, EaglePicher Corporation, EnerSys, Envia Systems, FMC, MicroSun Technologies, Mobius Power, SiLyte, Superior Graphite, and Townsend Advanced Energy. Additional battery developers and materials suppliers are anticipated to join the Alliance.

“The U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, a national research laboratory and leading developer of new battery technologies, has been active in encouraging the Alliance and will continue to serve in an advisory role as the Alliance begins operations.

How this will all be funded continues on page 2 – please read on.
