Although Adobe has had the Flash player available on Linux systems for some time, its AIR technology, which allows web developers to create web applications outside the browser, wasn’t previously available, although this has obviously now changed with Adobe’s new announcement, which sees AIR 1.5 now available free of charge to all Linux users. Adobe says that developers can use AIR 1.5 to “create compelling software applications” on Linux systems, with no additional efforts to those already extended to create them for Mac and Windows operating systems. Given that companies such as DirecTV, Fox News, Nasdaq and others are using Adobe AIR to “deliver uniquely branded experience, high def video and other rich content outside the browser”, Linux users can finally access these AIR powered apps too, levelling the playing field and helping to make it irrelevant which operating system you choose to use. David Wadhwani, general manager and vice president of the Platform Business Unit at Adobe said: “The release of Adobe AIR 1.5 for Linux builds on our ongoing commitment to the Linux community and our legacy of creating technologies that work consistently across operating systems. “Using Adobe AIR, millions of Web developers can now be Linux developers, and with little effort and no additional costs, companies can now target emerging markets and a broad set of new devices where Linux is growing in popularity.” Adobe also says that: “The graphical capabilities of Adobe AIR, along with its access to operating system functionality, give AIR applications the capacity to provide unprecedented user experiences and brand differentiation for the developers and companies creating them.” Adobe describes some of the AIR 1.5 benefits, which “includes functionality introduced in Adobe Flash Player 10, such as support for custom filters and effects, native 3D transformation and animation, and extensible rich text layout.” “Offering new features and performance improvements to create more expressive AIR applications, Adobe AIR 1.5 incorporates the open source WebKit HTML engine and now accelerates application performance with “SquirrelFish,” the new WebKit JavaScript interpreter.” Adobe says that AIR “also includes a new, encrypted database that meets enterprise security compliance requirements while storing data more securely on customers’ computers.” So, which Linux distros are compatible with Adobe AIR 1.5?
