Not every product launched at a Macworld Expo was successful. The Newton MessagePad was arguably one of the company's biggest flops. Apple was also largely responsible for the short-lived move of the late (northern) summer Macworld Expo from Boston to New York - a change that was soon followed by the Expo's contraction to an annual event held in San Francisco only. Over the last several years trade shows have become an increasingly small part of the way Apple reaches its customers. It has already withdrawn or reduced its involvement with Macworld Tokyo, Apple Expo (Paris) and NAB (the National Association of Broadcasters convention). While the rise of the Internet and Apple's transition from a manufacturer to a marketing and retail company have led to a change in its relationship with its companies, the annual Macworld Expo has provided a focus and a level of excitement that we may never see again. It might not make much difference to Apple and large software and hardware vendors, but the event has been an important part of the marketing effort by many of the smaller companies in the Mac ecosphere. Although some people have the impression that Macworld Expo is an Apple event, it is in fact run by publishing and events company IDG. Now Apple says it is pulling out of Macworld Expo after the 2009 event. Please read on. |
