Harris Interactive, on the behalf of the Intel Corporation, surveyed 2,119 U.S. adults in November 2008. The survey, called “Internet Reliance in Today’s Economy,” asked questions about items that Americans most often want and think are 'must-haves' in their daily lives. Internet access was rated the highest of those discretionary spending things that Americans just cannot live without in their daily lives. Other highly ranked things were eating out, clothes shopping, gym membership, and cable television. The conclusions of the study found: 46% of women and 30% of men would forego sex for two weeks in order to have access to the Internet. Gismodo.com writer Dan Nosowitz, who wrote the article “Intel Survey: Internet Almost as Important as Sex” responded to these figures: “Frankly, that's lower than I'd expect: I'm not sure what kind of Casanovas they polled, but I go without sex for two weeks sometimes totally by accident." Nosowitz added, "On the other hand, every time I've gone two weeks without the Internet, it was as some kind of forced vacation and I really felt the pain."
