In the UK the emphasis would appear to have been on such home grown staples as the BBC, Gordon Brown and David Cameron. Although Barack Obama does get an honourable mention, along with the inevitable Sarah Palin and the Large Hadron Collider.

The fastest rising search terms for 2008 in the UK were, in full:

iplayer
facebook
iphone
youtube
yahoo mail
large hadron collider
obama
friv
cam4
jogos

When it comes to Brit popularity, nobody could knock Facebook off the top spot although the BBC (also home to the most heard UK voice online) came a close second followed by YouTube and eBay.

Interestingly, the most popular politician was Gordon Brown. The irony being that people were only searching for him because he has been so bloody unpopular in the UK this year. David Cameron, the leader of the opposition, comes second which is one place up on Barack Obama.

Ever wanted to know what the British are eating? Well fish and chips is off the menu, as are curry and burgers. The fastest rising recipe searches for the UK reveal that the food we most want to cook is cupcake. The full top ten is:

cupcake
meatballs
rocky road
crumble topping
eaton mess
pork belly
rhubarb fool
lemon posset
honey comb
beer batter
