Palin beats Obama in Google search popularity contest E-mail

As far as Australian Googlers are concerned, 2008 has been the year of crises, Olympics, elections and movies. Australians were particularly keen, it seems, on the economic meltdown and the swimmer Stephanie Rice for example.

Some surprises included the popularity of Australian TV show Underbelly which looked at the Melbourne underworld, and the interest even this far away from the US in Sarah Palin.

When it comes to the fastest rising search terms of 2008 in Australia, the iPhone rules the roost, followed by Facebook and Google Maps. The full top ten is as follows:

iphone
facebook
google maps
youtube
wiki
anz
wow
maps
sarah palin
underbelly

When it comes to most popular, then the simple keyword 'games' beat off all the competition including Sydney and YouTube. The full top ten is:

games
sydney
youtube
myspace
facebook
google
ebay
my
weather
hotmail

While we all recover from the fact that Australians are using Google to search for Google, and doing so enough to make it the sixth most popular search term, let's switch our focus to the other categories.

Heading the top Olympians list was Stephanie Rice who saw off Usain Bolt and Grant Hackett, while the top crisis of the year was obviously 'financial' quickly followed by time and credit.

The top movies search list was headed by Australia, which I have to assume is a generic search rather than a specific film, leaving Batman with The Dark Knight to mop up that honour followed by Indiana Jones.

What about the rest of the world? Let's take a look at the United Kingdom next shall we, seeing as my fellow Brits are always good for an eccentric laugh.
