Dell brings “smallest ever” commercial desktop to market E-mail

Are you or your employees stuck in “space-constrained” offices or cubicles? Then Dell’s new “OptiPlex 160” might be the answer to a bit of extra space on your desk, although if a few inches of extra space is the difference between sanity and insanity in the office, you might have other problems.

Space, the final, and financial, frontier. You can have a bit of extra space thanks to Dell’s new “smallest ever” commercial OptiPlex desktops, but as with all new hardware technologies, you’ll have to pay for it.

Still, for companies that are upgrading their computers, Dell’s OptiPlex 160 comes with more than just space savings, but energy efficiency too, helping to make up for the fact that hardware upgrades (AKA new computers) are never free.

Saying its new computers are “designed for space-constrained offices” and “starting at” less than 5 pounds (2.267kg), they come complete with “innovative mounting options”, a “highly efficient power supply” and a “low-voltage Intel Atom processor”.

Yes, the Atom processor is part of the mix, clearly able to deliver everyday computing power for standard office work, browsing, documents, email (etc) in netbooks – and now office computers, too.

There’s even going to be a dual-core Atom processor available in “early 2009” according to the tech specs (see page 2) – although this will make some companies wait to see how much extra the dual-core Atom model will cost.

Dell says the “space-saving design” with its hardware features help to “maximise productivity while reducing workspace clutter.”

The features, in brief:

- Dell’s smallest commercial desktop footprint
- 87% efficient internal power supply
- Up to 160 GB hard drive or up to 64 GB solid state drive
- Optional wireless networking and up to 4 GB of memory
- Low-voltage Intel Atom processor

Dell says that “like all of [its] OptiPlex desktops, the 160 comes with a long, managed lifecycle and the support of Dell systems management solutions such as the Dell Client Manager console.

“All OptiPlex desktops feature optional customizable Dell Services such as ProSupport, extended limited warranties, Custom Factory Integration, Installation and Deployment Services and many more.”

Darrel Ward, the Director of the Dell Product Group said: “With today’s release of the 160, we are rounding out a complete refresh of OptiPlex products from the world’s top seller of business desktops. [According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker Q3 2008.]

“The OptiPlex 160 adds yet another low-profile, entry-level option to our diverse portfolio of enterprise solutions, delivering essential performance for common office applications.”

More details and full tech specs are on page 2, please read on.
