Shiels adds in the article "Our children have progressed to the point where cutting doesn't work.”

In addition, Shiels states that adolescents with self-embedding disorder also have other psychological disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder.

The WedMD article concludes by quoting Dr. Donald Frush, chief of pediatraic radiology at Duke University (Durham, North Carolina, U.S.A.).

Dr. Frush aims his remarks at parents when he says, “If your child has inflammation and swelling due to a foreign body, and there's no clear reason, you might want to have a conversation with her [or his] doctor."
