Microsoft has claimed a three-to-one Black Friday weekend victory for Xbox 360 over PlayStation 3. If the figures prove to be correct, Sony's expensive console could be in for a walloping at the sales counter this Christmas.Featured Whitepaper

Without mentioning any numbers, Microsoft claims retailers have reported Xbox 360 outsold the PlayStation 3 by three-to-one. Xbox 360 sales were said to be up by 25 percent compared with the corresponding weekend in 2007. Concerns over the state of the economy appear to have been offset by Xbox price cuts - the entry-level model costs just under $US200. Furthermore, Microsoft claims strong sales in Europe since the price drop. Officials said Xbox 360 is "outselling the PlayStation 3 week over week across Europe." The company also claims "record-paced software sales" for the Xbox 360, citing strong sales for Gears of War 2, Fable II and Lips. "We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market," said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the interactive entertainment business at Microsoft. "Record Black Friday sales in the US, coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009," he added. The Xbox 360 is thought to have sold at least 22 million units, compared with approximately 17 million PS3s. But the big winner of the current generation is Nintendo's Wii, with over 34.5 million units sold. All three pale by comparison with the 140 million PS2s sold since Sony's previous console went on sale in 2000. |
