The financial crisis enveloping the world will probably hit sponsorship funds for the forthcoming Australian national Linux conference, but registrations for the event, which begins on January 19, 2009, have been strong, says the man who holds the purse string.

"We expect that sponsorship funds may be a bit tighter in the current environment," Garry Harradence, one of many Tasmanians who is giving up his time to help organise what is widely considered the best of the three Linux conferences held during the year, told iTWire in an interview. He said that sponsorship arrangements, in some cases, were being finalised. HP and IBM have signed up as emperor penguin sponsors, the top category of supporter, and Harradence said more sponsors would follow. Other categories include the king penguin sponsors and royal penguin sponsors. Harradence, who is a financial planner by profession, said it was unlikely that there would be a shortfall in funds needed to organise and host the conference which is to be held at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. "A shortfall is possible, but unlikely. Many of the costs are not fixed, that is related only to actual numbers," he said. Harradence was unable to provide a sponsorship break-up as to cash and kind, as he said this was "commercially sensitive" A member of the Tasmanian Linux Users Group (TasLUG), the organisers of the conference, he said he had developed an interest in Linux and FOSS in general after seeing an article in The Australian about a man who had got a refund on his Windows licence. (This was probably the case of Geoffrey Bennet and is told in detail here). |
