Page 2 of 2 We know Apple is interested in touch, and we now know that its supplier has a multitouch screen - but it's a big jump to conclude that this means a touchscreen Mac is in the near future.Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
There are three possibilities: Apple won't offer a multitouch iMac (at least for a while), it will do so using the LG display, or it will use a panel from another vendor. "Because they can" doesn't seem to be a good enough reason for Apple to do things. So just because LG has a multitouch screen, Apple won't feel compelled to buy it. Don't forget those other long-lived rumours about Apple developing a touchscreen device that would sit somewhere between the iPhone/iPod touch and the MacBook. If you can't wait for Apple to deliver a touch iMac, there's always the SlipCOVER touchscreen from Troll Touch. Priced at $US899 (20 in) and $US1099 (24 in), these user-installable panels simply slip over the iMac's screen to provide touch capability. While they are a convenient way of interacting with kiosks and museum-style displays, simply using touchscreens as mouse replacements doesn't deliver the full potential of multitouch for user interaction - that requires deeper software support in the operating system. Am I ruling out the possibility that Apple will adopt LG's multitouch panel? No. All I'm saying is that there is far from enough evidence to assume that it is about to appear in an Apple product. |
