Ericsson picked to light up Basslink fibre E-mail

Ericsson Australia has been chosen to provide the fibre optic transmission technology for the optic fibre cable running alongside the Basslink power cable.

Ericsson will supply and install DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) equipment to provide multi-channel 10Gbps terrestrial and submarine links between Tasmania and Victoria for end-to-end broadband capacity.

Basslink Telecoms will initially light up 40Gbps across Bass Strait, with the ability to add more capacity in future as demand grows," said Dr Paul Brooks, technical project director, Basslink Telecoms.

The equipment is critical to the success of the project because the very long unrepeatered length of the cable makes extracting maximum bandwidth from it very technically challenging: the light signal is attenuated to about one millionth of its initial intensity as it travels along the cable.

Basslink and Aurora Energy announced earlier this month that they would both be supplying wholesale services between Tasmanian locations and th mainland using a combination of Basslink fibre and Aurora Energy's on-island fibre.


According to Tony Malligeorgos, vice president, marketing and business development, Ericsson Australia and NZ, Basslink will use Ericsson's Marconi MHL 3000 MultiHaul DWDM technology, tailored to meet the unique characteristics of this installation.

"It will employ advanced optical [raman amplification] technology that makes it possible to cover the 303km submarine portion under Bass Strait without mid-span amplification or repeaters," said Malligeorgos.

Testing is scheduled to commence in early 2009. The MHL 3000 DWDM equipment will be combined with the Ericsson OMS3255 optical multiservice core switching platform, enabling Basslink's customers to choose from an array of standard interfaces and connectivity options. A fully redundant equipment configuration will be installed.

The MHL 3000 DWDM has been widely deployed throughout Australia in Telstra's network where several hundred nodes provides services over thousands of kilometres of fibre.
