He added: "What we have tried to do is provide a complete solution for SMBs that enables them to compete in the modern environment. Typically SMBs might not be able to afford the capital investment for these applications."

The system will for example enable a small company to operate a call centre using home-based operators: the call centre functionality and all the applications they would need such as a CRM could be delivered over a standard broadband link to any browser.

NEC is also providing single sign on to all the applications - some of which might be hosted by NEC and others - for example those also available direct from the developer as a SaaS - would continue to be hosted by those vendors.

Iacovitti said: "Feedback form SMB customers indicates that one of the problems with SaaS and cloud based applications is managing dozens of different passwords. You long in once and we authenticate you to all your available applications.

NEC Australia will deliver the service through its 240 strong channel community as well as its Nextep broadband service which currently reaches 14,000 businesses. Services will be either branded by NEC or under the brand of the channel partner. However they will be available to any business in Australia via any ISP. NEC will host the service offering locally in its Melbourne and Springfield (Qld) data centres.

On top of the hosted applications and UC offerings, NEC says it will create a SaaS 'intranet' for every customer that gives them the ability to provide collaboration tools within their organisation, such as shared calendars, blogs etc. According to NEC business manager, Vince Kennedy this is a SharePoint-like solution it comes from an Australian company, ACRYN.

Applications Net at launch will have 15 applications available, costing from $5 per user per month.
