However, this project failed in 2004. Since then, the primary focus of PHB for the small biotech company has been to grow it within plants. In 2005, Metabolix received the “Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award" fro the development and commercialization of PHB. The PHB is built into the leaves of switchgrass, which can be easily harvested and eventually used as a renewable fuel source and, in this case, as a non-petroleum based plastic.
