Apple tops for smartphone satisfaction E-mail

This is almost a 'dog bites man' story: Apple's iPhone has topped a customer satisfaction study. Who would have thought it?

JD Power and Associates is a well-established research firm that, among other things, carries out satisfaction and quality surveys. This year's Business Wireless Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study put Apple well ahead of other manufacturers.

Apple received a score of 778 on a 1000-point scale, and was the only vendor to receive a five 'Power Circle' rating. It followed by BlackBerry vendor RIM on 703 and Samsung on 701, both earning four circles.

HTC and Motorola were bracketed together on three circles (676 and 659 points respectively), with Palm bringing up the rear on 644 points and two circles.

When you see the list of the top five reasons people gave for choosing a smartphone brand, it's not surprising that Apple did well.

They were Internet capability (45 percent), ability to use e-mail account (41 percent), overall design/style (39 percent), Bluetooth capabilities (37 percent) and keyboard style (eg QWERTY) (37 percent).

We know that not every iPhone owner is completely satisfied with the handset's Bluetooth capabilities, so that could be one area where it got marked down. On the other hand, anyone that doesn't like the iPhone's soft keyboard probably wouldn't have bought one so their opinions wouldn't count.

What features do people most want to see in their smartphone? See page 2.
