When an iPhone or iPod Touch is in DFU mode, iTunes is reporting an error 2001 or 21 and saying the that the iTouch in question can’t be recognised. Users have reported trying with more than one iDevice and getting the same result, but having no problems on older Macs or on Windows devices, thus forcing users to either install Windows on their Macs through BootCamp, Fusion or Parallels to do the job, or just find an older Mac or a Windows machine to do the job. Gizmodo questions whether or not Apple has specifically done this to hobble the jailbreak/pwning process, although a commenter noted that the MacBook has a different chipset to other Macs and that it could be an unintended consequence. Gizmodo however thinks it could be software modification on Apple’s part, and points to Apple’s strict iPhone SDK in reminding us all of Apple’s policy of their way or the highway. The question now is whether or not the iPhone Dev Team can get around this issue, something that they had to do once before when iTunes 8 first got in the way of pwnage. There’s no comment from the Dev Team as yet at their site, although the Dev Team has reported that it is able to pwn the latest iPhone OS 2.2 beta 2. Meanwhile in related iPhone news, ZiPhone Zibri has created a new blog and has posted news of a vulnerability that can be placed into videos played by iPhones, iPod Touches and video iPods that can crash Apple’s iTouch iDevices, although the video can crash PC video players too, so it’s not a specific iPhone problem as such. Zibri says: “Here we are again! When Steve says something it usually happens... So what do we have here? A video. Yes a stupid nasty video which can crash ANY iPod/iPhone. A different version of this video can even crash many pc applications. “Apple was contacted and a mail was sent to bugtraq mailing list. Only a Forbes journalist showed up. You will read about it on Forbes on monday. Later that day the video will be posted here for further "booms". Clicking on the picture above after monday will crash your iPod/iPhone but it won't harm it.” The link to the Forbes article is here, while the video Forbes took of the crash can be seen here. Given that Zibri has removed the offending video clip, the Forbes video is now the only way to see the crash in action.
