Gmail SMS Gchat gets delayed by glitch E-mail

Gmail’s new SMS feature that lets you send free SMS messages to US only phone numbers launched via Gmail Labs, but due to a glitch, it has been pulled and delayed for at least two weeks.

Ever since SMS text messaging became possible across phone networks, its popularity has soared, spawning text chat with its own abrvtd wrds to squeeze messages into the 160 character limit.

But along with the convenience of SMS messaging came a high price per message relative to the amount of data each message uses across the network, with an individual SMS still costing some users 25 cents per message.

Naturally that price varies by country, by carrier and by the plan you’re on, but SMS messages cost far more than messages sent via Instant Messaging programs which are now common on many smartphones.

Even so, SMS is still popular, and when someone like Google comes up with a way to send text messages free of any additional charges via Gmail, people take notice.

The unofficial Google Operating System blog listed details of how the system worked as listed via a now deleted post at Gmail help.

The Gmail help topic explained:

“You can send SMS messages to your contacts' mobile phones using Gmail Chat. To do so from Gmail:

“1. Enter your contact's name in the 'Search or invite friends' box in Chat, and select Send SMS from the box of options that appears to the right of your contact's name. Or, if you already have a Chat window open for this contact, just click Video & more, and select Send SMS.

“2. In the dialog box, enter a phone number in the 'Send SMS messages to this number' field. For now, this feature works only on United States phone numbers. If you're outside the US, you can still use it, but you won't see the SMS option in Chat until you enable it manually in the Chat settings page.

“3. Click Save.

“4. A Chat window appears. Just type your message as you would normally. When you hit Enter, the message will be sent to the phone number you entered.

“If your contact replies, the text message response will appear as a reply in Chat. These conversations are stored in your Chat history just like regular chats (but keep in mind that you can’t go off the record while communicating via SMS).”

So, what went wrong? The explanation from Google is on page 2. Please read on!
