The website of the Australian national Linux conference has not been accessible through its linux.conf.au domain name since at least October 19.

The co-organiser of the 2009 conference, Ben Powell, said this was due to a problem at the registrar level which would, hopefully, be fixed by next week.

The 2009 conference is scheduled to be held in Hobart from January 19 to 24.

People wishing to register for the conference can access the website through its old domain - marchsouth.org - at which it was hosted until moving to the linux.conf.au domain a few months ago.

Else, people can go to conf.linux.org.au, a secure site, and register.

Powell said the conf.au domain was a temporary one and the site encountered similar problems every year.

The conf.au address has not seen any take-up in Australia; it was meant to be used for conferences. Linux Australia is the only organisation utilising such a domain.

The conf.au domains remain under the control of former .au administrator Robert Elz. Most other domain names were freed up on July 1, 2002, when a new domain name system came into operation.

auDA which administers domains in Australia has the legend "not accepting registrations at this time" for both conf.au and info.au. However, for the latter, existing registrations can be updated by visiting aunic.org and completing an online form.
