But Oppenheimer was also on the call, and he wasn’t silent, saying: “We’re very pleased to have grown revenue 35 percent and to have generated $9.1 billion in cash in fiscal 2008. Looking ahead, visibility is low and forecasting is challenging, and as a result we are going to be prudent in predicting the December quarter.

“We are providing a wide range for our guidance, targeting revenue of $9.0 to $10.0 billion and earnings per diluted share between $1.06 and $1.35”.

Anyone wanting to watch the live stream of its Q4 2008 financial results conference can do so via this link at Apple’s site (using Quicktime).

Now the focus will turn to Macworld 2009, where word of new iPhones and potentially even an iPhone Nano might appear, a new 17-inch MacBook Pro that might even come with Blu-ray (despite Jobs calling Blu-ray licensing a world of hurt) and perhaps even some other magical Apple product like a Mac Netbook. Maybe even a Tablet!

Yes, Jobs essentially denounced Blu-ray and netbooks at the new MacBook launch, but let’s not forget Jobs totally dissing the idea of a video iPod before launching one a few months later.

Misdirection? Jobs has heard of it, and uses it - there's no doubt about that!

What comes next year will be very interesting and unless Apple is coming up with some totally new category game changer once more, the idea of a Mac netbook and/or Tablet, or a bigger iPhone Pro type device, plus a renewed Mac Mini with NVIDIA graphics is all still on the table.

Along with new iMacs and MacBooks running Intel’s Core i7 processors...

Intel's Atom processor offers opportunities to Apple too, but then so does its purchase of the PA Semi company and its "super" PowerPC chips, so roll on 2009 and Apple's next surprises!
