BlackBerry flips into the market with BlackBerry Pearl Flip E-mail

Flipping into action with a well known but previously unavailable form factor on the BlackBerry platform is the “BlackBerry Pearl Flip”, which essentially is the popular Pearl model, complete with the now standard trackball, in a flip phone format. BlackBerry lovers will flip out!

If you’ve always loved your BlackBerry but wished for a flip phone form factor, the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 will be the phone for you.

It’s a 2G device, and not 3G/3.5G like the BlackBerry Bold or even the upcoming BlackBerry Storm, but with BlackBerry’s long heritage in data compression for performance even over 2G networks, sending and receiving emails will be just as fast as you’re already used to.

The phone itself uses the same “SureType” keyboard as the Pearl, with two letters per key, and the pearl trackball itself is nicely recessed and feels very nice to use under your thumb, as I discovered in a one-on-one briefing earlier this afternoon for a hands-on play before the phone itself soon launches through Optus.

I also took the opportunity to test a SanDisk 16GB microSD card on the Pearl Flip, and it’s nice to see that it just worked, first time. 16GB cards still officially cost AUD $140, but their price will soon drop as with all previous cards and few will be without at least 16GB of storage whatever their handheld device.

There’s also a screen on the phone’s lid, so when the flip is closed, you can still see important information like the time, battery levels, signal strength, incoming message information, and a photo of the contact calling you, if a photo has been saved for that caller.

This is similar to other flip phones, although BlackBerry has made sure to link front-screen notifications with the relevant application appearing when you open the phone, for example ensuring that a new mail message brings up the messaging application.

Although the Flip will soon be in stores for all to see and try, you can visit its online showcase called “Flip for It”, where you can “learn more about the styling, features and wide range of mobile lifestyle and business applications available for this smartphone.”

BlackBerry is also putting on a competition, letting “individuals in Australia register on the website before 30 November 2008” to be in the running to “win a trip to New York for them and a friend to celebrate New Year’s Eve.”

Phil McDermott, Head of Product Marketing, Optus SMB said: “Optus sees the growth of the convergence market as a key driver for innovation in products and services that support mobility.  We have seen this with an increase in demand for smartphones and we expect the launch of the new BlackBerry Pearl Flip to appeal to an even wider market with its blend of flexibility, design and functionality”, adding that “Optus is very excited to be launching this device to our customers.”

Gregory Wade, Regional Vice President, Asia Pacific for RIM, said, “The popularity of BlackBerry smartphones has grown tremendously in Australia and the introduction of the BlackBerry Pearl Flip phone will help extend the reach of the BlackBerry platform even further.  Operating on the Optus nation-wide network, the BlackBerry Pearl Flip is a powerful and stylish choice for flip phone users who want to start doing more with their phone than just talk.”
