After an experiment lasting a couple of years where attendance was by invite only, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) looks like it will be returning to an old haunt and opening the doors wide for 2009. How long will it last?Featured Whitepaper

Well revamped if you consider the fact that it is returning to how it was remembered a few years ago. Most likely we are looking at a chaotic combination of mind numbing music and light coupled with a heaving mass of public and press bodies wanting to get close to new games and/or booth babes. Back to the LA Convention centre goes the event, with ticket sales rumoured to expand the public participation beyond the current press invitee list only. Great for fans, not so great for video gaming press trying to land interviews and the like. E3 will also be earlier in the year, not quite the month of May as it was in days of yore, instead running from June 2nd through to June 4th. Whether this will be a permanent arrangement or not is yet to be seen, with further information to arrive shortly. I know however that many in the video game press will be rolling eyes heavenward about this announcement. A return to the over bloat of pre 2006 E3’s will make the challenge of reporting events from the show that much steeper. In recent years E3 has consisted of many closed door events, showcasing individual company products to select press. This was in response to complaints that the show had lost its relevance and was failing under the weight of its own glitz. It looks like the focus of the event has changed again, giving punters a more hands-on way to experience their favourite upcoming titles. Whether this renewed focus implodes with history repeating will be revealed next June. |
