An online report suggests the reason why the 17-inch MacBook Pro (MBP)
didn't get the swish new aluminium cases of the new 13-inch MacBook and
15-inch MacBook Pro was because of issues in "ramping up production",
thus "delaying them by a few months". In short, if you want to upgrade
your existing 17-inch MBP, why bother doing it now?Featured Whitepaper

That's according to crunchy news site "AppleInsider", which suggests that production issues meant a 17-inch model wasn't able to be made, and won't for "several months". Several months could, however, mean anything. Several is "more than one", so we might get a "surprise" 17-inch MBP announcement at Macworld, or it might come in the months between January and the middle of the year, if the "early next year" prediction is actually going to come true. The issues in question, sayeth AppleInsider in turn quoting MacNN, are “optical drive and display issues”. Hey, no screen and no optical drive are pretty serious, although it must be noted that the “minor” refresh of the 17-inch MacBook Pro did get a 17-inch LED screen at 1920x1200 resolution, so it’s hard to know how accurate MacNN’s claims are. As for optical drive issues, could this instead mean that a Blu-Ray drive, at least as an option, may finally be officially be appearing on an Apple notebook? Apple is, after all, a member of the Blu-Ray Association, not that it seems to be doing much on that front. AppleInsider also suggests that sightings of the “real” 17-inch MacBook Pro look very similar, but slightly larger, than the 15-inch MacBook Pro, and given that these things cost a few thousand dollars, why would anyone interested in splurging on a 17-inch model want to end up with last year’s design when a new one was “around the corner”? There’s also the issue of no new Mac Mini’s. Why does Apple bother to sell these if it’s not going to regularly update them? Hopefully we’ll see new models appearing at Macworld January 2009. What about the MacBook Air? And are the latest MacBooks really worth buying anyway, especially at their current inflated prices? Please read on to page 2. |
