Science DiscussionsThe AAP is considering this doubling amount for vitamin D because recent medical research has indicated that children are not getting sufficient amounts, and the extra amount could help prevent various serious diseases. The October 12, 2008 New York Times article “Doubling of Vitamin D for Children Is Urged,” based on reporting by the Associated Press, states “To meet the new recommendation of 400 units daily, millions of children will need to take vitamin D supplements each day, the American Academy of Pediatrics said. That includes breast-fed infants — even those who get some formula — and many teenagers who drink little or no milk.” The AP article is titled “Pediatricians double vitamin D recommendations.” The Times article adds, “Most commercially available milk is fortified with vitamin D, but most children do not drink enough of it — four cups daily would be needed — to meet the new requirement, said Dr. Frank Greer, who helped write the report.” The research points to evidence that vitamin D is very beneficial for strong bones, along with reducing the dangers from diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), cancer, and other such serious diseases. However, the AAP points out that the evidence is not definite and the amount of vitamin D needed to provide safeguards against such diseases is not known for sure. However, they are working on these answers. Find out more information on the importance of vitamin D on page two. |
