OLO – it’s the name of what looks like a notebook or netbook computer,
but in place of the trackpad, you slot in your iPhone – and use its
screen as a trackpad instead! Genius of an idea – or as dumb as the
Palm Foleo that never was?Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
As you can see from the image below, the screen of the OLO appears to be running a desktop version of Mac OS X, which isn’t the interface the iPhone uses, so it’s not clear just how accurate a representation this image is of the OLO in operation. Windows Mobile users have been able to access a similar-ish device called the RedFly for some months, although the connection between the RedFly is done by cable or Bluetooth, not by inserting the WM phone into the notebook itself. The concept for both is similar to the idea of the Palm Foleo, a companion to the Palm Treo devices which was effectively meant to give you access to the data on your phone, but instead of doing emails and reading documents on your phone’s smaller screen, you could do it on the larger screen of the Foleo device. At the time there were cries of the Foleo folly, not only because people were expecting the Foleo to be a standalone device, but because the projected cost would have been similar to the cost of the phone itself. Netbooks hit the scene not much later, such as the Asus Eee PC and others, which are standalone computers, and these have been the hit the Foleo was meant to be. The RedFly started life at US $499, but is now “on special” until the end of October at US $199, potentially indicating that it just hasn’t been that popular. There’s no launch date for the OLO Computer as yet, nor any true specs, pricing or other info besides the image. All that’s listed is “coming soon”, along with the message “Sorry but your PC is out!” Let’s hope the OLO isn’t the “oh no”, instead – and until October 14 (US time) we still don’t know whether the OLO will be wiped out by a real MacBook netbook from Apple, or not. Still, it looks quite intriguing, and if the price is right, and more standard “computer like” features can be enabled, as opposed to just being a bigger screen for the iPhone, the OLO could be go, go, go! ![]() The OLO iPhone-powered computer... |
