Science DiscussionsThe upper crust of these 200 highest-education colleges/universities--The Top Ten--are found in the United States of America (U.S.A.) and the United Kingdom (U.K.). Six of them are in the U.S. and the other four are in the U.K. As announced by the "Times Higher Education" magazine, the top ten colleges are: 1. Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. 2. Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A. 3. University of Cambridge, Cambridge, U.K. 4. University of Oxford, Oxford, U.K. 5. California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California, U.S.A. 6. Imperial College London, London, U.K. 7. University College London, London, U.K. 8. University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. 9. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge. Massachusetts, U.S.A. 10. Columbia University, New York City, New York, U.S.A. All of the different rankings are found at “World University Rankings,” a website of QS World University Rankings, where QS stands for Quacquarelli Symonds, itself a top-ranked world career and education network. The rankings of these 200 colleges are based on interviews with 6,354 academics and 2,339 universities, along with other important factors including the teacher-to-student ratio found within each of the colleges. The Telegraph.co.uk article “British universities slip in global league” states that “Britain has more top-rated universities than any other country outside the United States, although other nations are catching up.” The top 200 colleges in 2008 come from 33 different countries. The number of countries included in the listing increased by five over the 2007 rankings. This increase indicates that more countries are emphasizing higher education within their countries. The countries that are fiercely competing against the United Kingdom and the United States include Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, and India.
