Nokia N96 delivers the goods, Tube 5800 iPhone-clone awaits E-mail

GSM Arena also complains that the keyboard on the N96 isn’t as nice as previous versions, looking very similar to the N81 keyboard.

Well, here I personally disagree once more with the complaints, I actually much prefer the smooth keyboard, especially around the D-Pad on the face of the phone (as opposed to the keypad that slides out from beneath the screen).

Having flat keys makes it much harder to press the red “end/hang up” key, something that on the N95 and other phones takes you out of wherever you were, such as in the SMS or email messaging application, back to the main screen.

Pressing “C” is how you delete a character you’ve typed in, and on the N95 I often found myself pressing the red “hang up” key instead. Actually I’d have preferred a dedicated large “back/delete” button on the N96 as can be found on the E66, this much larger dedicated back key should be on all Nokia phones.

So, while some don’t like the N96’s smooth keys, for me, they’re a big improvement.

Better speakers adorn the N96, the nifty “stand” on the back is also incredibly handy, and while there’s still no real Xenon flash on the N96 (as there is on the N82), the dual-LED flash is an improvement over the previous models. That said, I wish Xenon flashes were standard on all camera phones!

The N82 and upcoming N85 have a dedicated lens cover, both of which are slide down covers, as opposed to the slider on the original N95. For me, removing this lens cover is a bad idea, because scratching the lens or putting smudges on it is much easier.

I was told at the N96 launch that putting a cover would have resulted in a slightly thicker phone, and given the N96 is slimmer than the N95, keeping the new phone slim was clearly a consideration.

However a camera lens is a very important thing, and I would have hassled my engineers to maintain the N96 thickness while also ensuring a lens cover was present.

What else is of note with the N96? Please read on to page 3.
