Science DiscussionsThe researchers from Duke University’s Children's Hospital studied obese female children from the ages of nine to 13 years. All of the children were enrolled in a weight-management program where they read the novel Lake Rescue (published by Beacon Street Press), part of a series called "Beacon Street Girls." The book is about an overweight girl who worries about an outdoor school trip. However, she meets new friends on the trip, while improving her self-esteem and learning new ways to exercise. The special point about the book was that it contains special passages that pointed out the correct ways to live a healthy lifestyle. It also mentions ways to control weight, along with the use of role models and positive statements geared toward weight loss and healthy lifestyle. The researchers found that 31 girls, who read the weight-loss-geared book, decreased their body mass index (BMI) scores, while other girls, who didn’t read the book, did not decrease the BMI scores. BMI rates your body mass index based on height and weight. The other girls were divided into two groups. One group of 33 girls read a book that told a story of a girl who searches for a missing cat in Paris, France, but did not have any references to weight, obesity, or weight loss. The other group contained 17 girls who were in a weight-management program, like the first group who read “Lake Rescue,” but who were not assigned to read any books. Please read page two for comments made by the lead researcher in the study. |
