After all, Apple’s image has always been very fresh, but if the latest reports are to be believed, something is smelling very, very off. French Newspaper “Libération” has claimed (link to original French article) that benzene, styrene and other derivatives are being emitted by Apple’s high-end Mac Pro range. UK tech site The Register translates much of the story into English, which has an “anonymous researcher” working for the French National Centre for Scientific Research nothing a “strong odor” from his Mac Pro, then days later having eye, throat and nose irritations. But it turns out this isn’t the only case of bad smells, with users in Apple’s own forums also complaining of new car smells, strange odors, musty odors, rotting carpet and even cannabis smells, along with complaints of headachnes, nausea and dizziness! If the claims turn out to be true, it’s certainly not good news for Apple, nor its customers, as toxic chemicals are no-one’s cup of tea, and could easily open Apple up to potential lawsuits. The Register reports that “Libération” sent the machine off for tests, with Annie Leszkowicz, a French chemical risks expert telling the newspaper that: “Benzene can affect bone marrow. Imagine if a person worked eight hours per day for two months breathing in these vapors, some people could very well develop leukemia.” Apparently Apple France told “Libération” that their engineers were “working on the problem”, although Apple US and UK have reportedly made no comment, as is Apple’s usual wont. The Register has more details, but if this is true, users will be right to wonder what other toxic fumes might be emanating from other brands of computer, or any other Apple products. Surely, investigations will now take place, whatever the outcome of what could be an odourously odious Mac Pro bad smell scandal. |
