Similarly, iNotes users  can view or create contacts, and view calendars and details of meetings, all-day events, reminders and anniversaries.

"I really like the iNotes ultralite mode," said Andy Brunner, principal and owner of Switzerland-based ABData Information Technology Consulting and Engineering.

"It is very fast, works well and has the same look and feel of the iPhone user interface. Congratulations to IBM on this introduction of support for the iPhone," he added.

The arrival of iNotes ultralight has led US-based Aurora Health Care to rethink its mobile strategy.

"It's possible we'll see a lot of people with iPhones around here because of this," said Jason Michels, who manages the company's email network.

iNotes is currently number 5 on Apple's list of the most popular productivity web applications for the iPhone.

In related news, IBM also announced Lotus Protector for Mail Security, which protects Notes and Domino systems and their users from Internet-borne spam and viruses. It also features a sophisticated rules engine to block incoming and outgoing content based on customer specifications.
