Money-to-burn Gen Y’s waste it on “Caller Tones” E-mail

Well, BigPond is reporting that Gen Y’s are going “crazy” for caller tones, although given how long ago 3 Mobile introduced them, it is funny to see it has taken so many years to become “the latest craze”, as BigPond describes it.

Still, they must be right, because BigPond’s Caller Tones subscriber numbers have jumped by a whopping 350 per cent in the past 12 months, no doubt nicely contributing to BigPond’s earnings for that period.

Ye young-e (as opposed to ye olde) Gen Y-ers are described as being from 18 to 25 years old, and these are the people responsible for BigPond’s Caller Tones revenue stream, something that has undoubtedly been sweet, sweet music to the ears of Justin Milne.

Milne is the Telstra Media Group MD, and he happily “noted” (as we’re on a musical theme here) that “BigPond Caller Tones are a great way to customise your mobile phone and make it your own. In the same way ringtones are popular, I am sure Telstra mobile customers of all ages will soon join the caller tones phenomenon.

“Mobile phones really do make a statement about who we are and BigPond Caller Tones allow those ringing us to know what our favourite song is through to what footy team we love.”

BigPond found a Gen Y-er who says that caller tones really float her boat. Her name is Erika Kuehnel, and at 23 years old, in Brisbane, she’s right in the midst of Gen Y mania.

Her caller tone of the moment is called “Float On”, by a band called Modest Mouse, and she believes “it lets people know a bit about her personality when they call her mobile”, saying specifically that: “The terrific thing about my generation is that there is a real emphasis on being an individual, and so many different ways you can express your own personal style – even when people call your mobile phone!”.

Although I do hark back to my individuality in groups thing from page 1...

And as with ringtones, which can be individually assigned on most phones to different callers, Caller Tones also come with their own level of customisability, allowing Gen Y-ers to choose the tones different callers hear, hopefully preventing Mum or Dad from realising more money has been spent on digital music.

So, how many tones can you have in your library at any one time (it’s not 52), and what are the top tones of the week? Please read on to page 3...
