It might have rivals from Samsung and Western Digital, but hard disk maker Seagate claims its 500 G Momentus 5400.6 notebook drive has the highest areal density and the fastest data transfer rate in its class.Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
Seagate announced the Momentus 5400.6 in July. As the name suggests, it's a 5400 rpm device, and it is available in a range of capacities from 120 G to 500 G. The Momentus 5400.6 is said to be capable of withstanding 1000 g of non-operating shock, and 350 g while operating. And a free-fall sensor can detect a drop and park the heads in less time than it takes to fall 8 inches (20 cm). Like WD, Seagate claims its 500 G notebook drive offers quiet ("virtually inaudible") operation and low power consumption. But despite the growing number of notebook drives of this capacity, Seagate the company still claims the Momentus 5400.6 has the highest ever areal density for a notebook hard drive (394 G per square inch) and the fastest data transfer rate for a 5400 rpm notebook drive (87M per second). Yep, never mind the notional 3 G per second speed SATA promises, the actual transfer rates you get from hard drives are a lot lower. So which big-name computer maker has announced notebooks using Seagate's 500 G drive? See page two. |
