Nokia Tube tipped to launch on 2 October E-mail

When Nokia introduced the N96 in Australia at a press briefing this morning, photos of the device showing its keyboard were conspicuous by their absence. I couldn't help wondering whether Nokia wasn't preparing us for its keyboard-less touch screen phone dubbed the 'Tube' which, latest rumours say, is due within days.

Nokia gave the first details of the new device back in April . Now, a new leaked image of the Tube has emerged http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/pic-nokia-tube-leaked/2008-09-24 amid reports that it could be launched on 2 October.

Back in April it was rumoured that the Tube would be an S60 device with support for the DVB-H mobile TV standard for Europe and either built-in WiFi or HSDPA connectivity or both, and possibly GPS. Those specs would line up pretty closely with the N96. A touch screen version of S60 was announced in October 2007.

A couple of months after this first tidbit of information, the senior vice president of Nokia Markets told Reuters in June that Nokia would launch touch screen cellphones for every price segment later this year.

If that is true, Nokia will have to get its skates on. And also it would mean that Nokia has managed to keep its powder dry: so far there has been little speculation about touch screen devices from Nokia other than the, high end, Tube.
