The storm closed the NASA Johnson Space Center, which is located just outside of Houston, Texas, for over one week.

It was closed after the Category 2 storm hit the Texas Gulf Coast, centering its blast on Galveston, Texas.

Hurricane Ike made landfall at Galveston on September 13, 2008, at 2:10 a.m. Central Daylight Time (CDT) (0710 UTC) with winds of 110 miles per hour (177 kilometers per hour).

The city of Galveston is just southeast of Houston and the space center, which resides in Clear Lake City, a southern suburb of Houston.
